Strange day

Photo: Associated Press
So... Osama bin Laden is dead and people are rejoicing in the streets. Huh? I don't get it.

Although I understand completely why there is a sense of relief, a sense of closure for so many, I really don't understand the exuberance. It seems to me, that this should be a somber day. A day for reflection, a day to feel sad, and to remember all those who have lost their lives or lost their loved ones in this whole mess.

It's a strange day, and it makes me feel weird. Like I am being unpatriotic because I don't feel joyful. Am I weird? Am I the only one who doesn't feel like celebrating?

And now, we are left with all those crazy al-Qaeda-Taliban people who revered that nutcase, and quickly figure out when and how they are going to retaliate. Great. Gulp.

So, excuse me if I don't feel like partying right now, because truthfully, I feel kind of sick.

  1. I think it's an initial reaction and the reality of the situation will set in, soon enough. I'm not one to celebrate a death, but I do understand the sense of relief I and other's feel at this being's removal.

The first thing that came into my head when I heard the news was the song from The Wizard of Oz...ding dong the witch is dead. I posted it on my blog and it's been running through my head all day.

  2. I saw quite a few references to the same song yesterday.
But today I am hearing from a lot of people who feel the same as me. I find it all very disturbing and too similar to scenes of mobs burning American flags in the Mid-East and dragging dummies of American Presidents through the streets.

  3. You are not alone. How sad it is that it came to this. Killing the witch. It is indeed like watching the people in the Middle east celebrate.
Didn't Mark Twain say, I would never wish someone dead, but I enjoy reading a good obituary.
